Bromley Brighter Beginnings receives King’s Award for Voluntary Service 2023

Bromley Brighter Beginnings is incredibly excited to announce that we have received a King's Award for Voluntary Service. This award recognises outstanding work by volunteer groups to benefit their communities. It is the highest award that a volunteer group in the UK can receive, and it is considered to be the equivalent of an MBE.

We are thrilled and honoured to receive this award. For over 11 years our volunteers have given their time and their energy to help families living in poverty in the London borough of Bromley. It is thanks to the efforts of some truly incredible people that we have been able to carry out our mission; united by a shared passion to help the most vulnerable members of the community. It is truly fantastic to see those volunteers receiving this recognition.

Beds
Bed for Every Child – A Safe Place to Dream

Our ‘Bed for Every Child’ campaign has been running since 2016. Our mission: ensuring each child across the borough has a bed of their very own. Recent figures, according to End Child Poverty, revealed a shocking 20 per cent of children in Bromley live in poverty. Sadly, we regularly hear from our referrers about families where children do not have a bed of their own – instead, they are sleeping on the floor, the sofa, or sharing a bed with another family member.

We were thrilled and immensely thankful for the generous £65,000 grant we received from Global Make Some Noise this year. £60,000 of this incredible funding finances this programme for the next year, making a significant impact on local children's ability to get a good night's sleep.

Bromley family charity sees referrals rise again
Referrals to a Bromley charity which provides essentials for local families continue to rise, up 17% on last year as the cost of living crisis continues. Bromley Brighter Beginnings, a volunteer-led charity entirely funded by grants and donations, helps families in poverty who cannot afford basic items, including newborn and baby basic bundles, toys and books, clothing, school uniform, beds, kitchen appliances and even Christmas in a Bag. The charity has helped 595 families (1,055 children) in 2022/23 and demand for services is expected to continue to grow.

HH
A Healthy Home for Every Child

The aim of this campaign is to raise funds to provide basic kitchen appliances for families in need, living in the London Borough of Bromley.

Many families do not have a fridge to store perishable food in, or a cooker with which to prepare hot meals. With the current rise in food poverty and many families struggling financially, we will provide eligible households with white goods to enable them to feed themselves and the children in their care with healthy, nourishing, warm meals. We will be working with a local supplier of kitchen appliances to ensure prompt, safe delivery and installation of the necessary items.
